If you expect to import a very large amount of data, please contact us so we can increase import limits for you.
Before you start
Ando imports Slack history from the official Slack export.zip file. Export the data from Slack, download the ZIP when Slack emails you, then upload that original ZIP to Ando. Do not unzip, rename, or edit the export before uploading it.
Slack’s export rules depend on your Slack plan, your role, and whether your workspace or organization has been approved for broader export tools. Read more in this article from Slack.
Who can export from Slack
| Slack plan | Who can export | What they can usually export |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Workspace Owners and Admins | Messages and file links from public channels. Free workspaces can only export links to files from the last 90 days. |
| Pro | Workspace Owners and Admins | Messages and file links from public channels. |
| Business+ | Workspace Owners and Admins | Messages and file links from public channels. Workspace Owners can apply for additional export types, including all channels and conversations or a channel audit report. |
| Enterprise | Org Owners and Admins | Enterprise export tools, once enabled, can export data by conversation type, member, workspace, all channels and conversations, or channel audit. |

Import the ZIP into Ando
Once you have the Slack export ZIP:- Unzip the
.zipfile you got from Slack. - Open Ando.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Connected Apps.
- If this is your first time, drop the Unzipped
.zipfile into the uploader, or select it from your computer. If your workspace has imported data from Slack before, you can click on “Import Slack Data again” before uploading the file. - Wait for Ando to scan the export.
- Choose the Slack channels you want to import.
- Click on “Import channels”
- Do NOT leave the page until the first step has complete. Ando will tell you when it’s safe to navigate away.
- Once the import is complete, you’ll see your new channels in the sidebar!
What gets imported
Ando imports the channels you select from the Slack export file and brings the historical message context into your Ando workspace so your team can search and reference prior work. What Ando can import depends on what Slack included in the ZIP. If the export only contains public channels, only those channels will be available to select. The ZIP may include Slack metadata, message JSON files, and file links. Ando reads the export directly, so upload the ZIP exactly as Slack provided it.Troubleshooting
I do not see export settings in Slack: Ask a Workspace Owner or Admin on Free, Pro, or Business+, or an Org Owner or Admin on Enterprise, to export the data for you. Your Slack workspace may also restrict exports to members with the Export Admin system role. Private channels or DMs are missing: Your Slack export probably did not include them. Standard Free, Pro, and Business+ public-channel exports do not include private channels or DMs. Slack says the export is not ready: Wait for Slack’s email. Slack creates the ZIP asynchronously and sends a link when it is ready to download. The Ando upload fails: Make sure you are uploading the original.zip file from Slack. If the file was unzipped, renamed, recompressed, or edited, download a fresh copy from Slack and try again. Contact us if you continue to encounter errors.
